Marbella: a golf paradise
· 5 min. read
Malaga’s province vaunt of 53 golf courses and Marbella has 22 on its own, making a total of more than 70 courses on the Costa del Sol. This means that, in a territory easily accessible by car, a golf enthusiast can play, train or compete in a multitude of scenarios with different designs and difficulties.
The Costa del Sol has the perfect conditions for playing golf. The climate is the first ally. With an average of 300 sunny days a year, warm winters and little rainfall, the chances of playing golf with good weather, are 80% throughout the year. The geography also helps. The land is not completely flat, the greens have interesting slopes, sections with water and vegetation and some even offer sea views, this is the case of the Guadalmina course.
With so many fans, the courses are in constant competition, even the smallest is usually well equipped. All, of course, have a dedicated social area. Some, simply have a cosy terrace-bar, while others display a powerful clubhouse. The most exclusive is undoubtedly La Zagaleta, at the same time, the Marbella Club Golf Resort or La Quinta are VIP clubs.
It is important to clarify that some courses allow access to the practicing area, in return of an entrance fee, but wouldn’t allow you to play on the open courses if you are not a member. Exclusivity is a strong point of some of the best Marbella golf clubs and is part of their essence. Is possible to find clubs with fields requiring a skills of a certain level as of the rest of the players are on a proficient stage. There are, of course, good golf schools and private teachers who can increase the level of the amateurs. For beginners we highlight The Range a couple of kilometres from Puerto Banús, or the Cabopino Golf School.
In general, Marbella’s golf clubs are known for their high standards, this is why they get good ratings and feedbacks from their users. In addition, tournaments are plentiful throughout the year but it is important to check what conditions are required to participate. On international level, several important tournaments have been played on Costa del Sol, such as the Sloheim Cup at Finca Cortesin or the Spanish Open at Las Brisas.
Golf enthusiasts from all over the world come to enjoy their favourite sport on Costa del Sol by the thousands every year. Of course this is including prestigious sportsmen and women from the major competitions. Therefore is why many golf enthusiasts are looking for properties well located in this respect. Two fields where we recommend to practice
Magna Marbella
Magna is located in the aptly named “Golf Valley'”. An area with a high concentration of greens including those in the district of Nueva Andalucía and the neighbouring town of Benahavís. Magna is a 9-hole course, with a long layout designed by José María Elguezábal and built for all levels of game.
It has Pro Shop, Caddy Master, Drive Range and the innovative and fun TopTracer training system. Once there, it is essential to make a reservation for lunch at the Magna Café with stunning views of Marbella.
Río Real
This course, inaugurated in 1965, runs alongside the Rio Real river, accompanying it all the way to its outlet in the Mediterranean. That is why part of its design ends right by the water. It has 18 holes and 6,000 metres in length being considered one of the best in Spain. In addition to its maritime profile, thrives plenty of vegetation with autochthonous species such as pines, olive trees and cypresses. This large mass of trees provides both beauty and shade for players. This club has a very chic hotel and restaurant nearby, on the beach, you can also find Trocadero Arena restaurant.
There is a whole world of interesting trade around golf. Many of the products can be ordered online but it is very pleasant, if you are a keen golfer, to visit the specialised shops and get advised by their expert sales staff.
